Today’s Run – Easy Run
Total Mileage: 10.10
Total Time: 1:32:18
Average Pace: 9:08 min/mile
Another easy run in the books today. It was also another hot day! I really shouldn’t complain because it will be so much worse when the snow begins, but it does make my runs a little tougher!
I waited a little later again partly because I had a ton of stuff to get accomplished before family gets in town and partly because I enjoy waiting for my husband to get home from rotations to get started.
I was really sweaty and tired, but the run definitely could have gone much worse.
I am so ready for fall. It is my favorite time of year to run in and I love feeling the cold breeze while you run. Too bad fall up here lasts for about 1 month.
The husband and I never actually run TOGETHER per say unless we are side by side on a treadmill because he is so much faster. I just really enjoy being out there with him at the same time!
I did the same route I did last Sunday, but changed one road to help avoid a big hill. I had to write myself a reminder so I didn’t miss the new turn.
I made a point today to not look at my Garmin. This has always been a struggle for me. Lately I have been turning off the watch face so it just displays the time.
This way even though I know how long i’ve been out there based on the time of day, I can’t see every time .01 of a mile tick by.
Even though this has helped I have been watching the time like a mad woman each run.
Today I made a point to just stare straight ahead, DO NOT look at my Garmin, and just let the time go by.
I am going to have to cover the same miles no matter if I sit there and watch every minute pass or just enjoy the scenery and try to relax.
Low and behind…it worked! The run went by so much quicker and I felt much more relaxed.
What are some tricks you use to get through your longer runs?
Don’t forget to enter the I Am Funny Shirt Giveaway!! You have until Saturday at 12:00 pm EST!!!
See – now if you were out running at 4AM like I do every day then:
– You would avoid much of the humidity and heat.
– It is so dark you don’t have to worry about your Garmin unless you want to turn on the light to check it!
haha … I know I run at an insane time, but it is SO my time of day. Quiet, peaceful …
I was out at 0500 this morning. My trusty Runkeeper lady keeps me company. Can’t tell you how much I enjoy our chats though she only whispers split times in my ears.
I agree, I cannot wait until fall running! Woo hoo! I normally do not run with music, but on my long runs I’ve been listening to music and that helps a lot!!! Also, taking a new route helps because I don’t know every mile marker, but I’m finding that a bit tough to do lately. I find it I go early in the morning, time just kind of passes as the sun comes up 🙂
Haha I literally came here straight after commenting in another blog that I have never actually run with my husband despite 10 years of being together! We also go at the same time a lot, and always talk about running, but just don’t want it to get competitive (and I’d feel strange if he had to slow down THAT much for me!). I guess it DOES make sense given that our husbands times are similar and our times are similar… I always thought we were the weird ones 🙂
Haha that’s great! We have run together but only for short distances and when he is pretty much going to walk lol I just can’t even get close to his “easy” pace yet, but hopefully I will get there so we can one day! My husband is very focused too when he runs (as I am too) so I think sometimes it is better that we run apart, but we usually run at the same times at least!
Talking about so individually focused, I’ve been ruminating on a future post lately. I take my wedding ring off when I run because it bothers me to have something on one hand but not the other. But it’s become symbolic of more than that–a purposeful creation of a space separate from all of life’s issues. It’s not about freeing myself from the bonds of marriage or getting away from my wife or anything, just a separation so life’s little messes don’t screw with my workout.
Does that even make sense?
I’m a little nervous how she might take it.
Well that is a tricky one. Have you tried talking to her about it yet? I take off my engagement ring most times when I run but I always wear my band (but mine is also probably much smaller). I know my husband wears his as well but he is constantly paranoid that it is going to fall off of his hand! My father-in-law lost his ring several times running because it would fall of his hand so he doesn’t wear his running much. It is just personal preference – I would have to say I wouldn’t like it if my husband took his ring off running, but some women may not care! Just try talking to her and see what she thinks. Maybe you’ll be surprised!
Yikes! I haven’t taken off my ring in over 21 years other than to clean the diamonds (we have matching channel-set rings). I would feel bizarre!
Funny story – before we were married Lisa wanted to try running with me, it was April and chilly, and she lasted about a half mile before saying ‘it is cold, dark and scary … I’m going home’! That was 1991! Now she can’t do it physically, but at least we get to take nice walks (like tonight)
I did a challenge for myself/my readers a few months ago called Run Free For Me to help people disconnect from their watches and focus more on their bodies during a run and the whole challenge was extremely inspirational. I now do one run every week without a watch or knowing my exact numbers and I’m training for multiple races.
Keep rockin!
That is a great idea! Maybe I will have to start incorporating that into my week! I had my watch on but I didn’t look at anything until hear the end. I just ran as my body felt and the run went by so much faster and was much more enjoyable! Sometimes it’s nice to get back to the basics of running and enjoy all that is around you!
Exactly… it’s also taken some of the pressure off of training- at least for that one day. I’ve found it very beneficial mentally and physically.
I learned from the example of a running genius (olivetorun) and started doing regular ‘naked’ runs— they helped immensely! Most of the time, unless I’m tracking speed work, I run without paying any attention to my splits. So freeing; helps me run faster and happier!
Yes it does sound like a great idea!! I am going to have to start incorporating them in more often – at least once a week! 🙂
Haha. I know this reply is a bit late, but I love this. I’m forever getting in trouble from my coach for looking at my garmin. He tries to ban me from wearing it sometimes, but I feel naked without it. Haha thanks for this post!
Haha yes I know how that is! Sometimes it is nice just to run Garmin and technology less though 🙂
You are absolutely right- it be liberating running without. It reminds you to slow down and enjoy your run. This post is a great reminder 🙂
I have a full coming up Saturday and it’s a goal race for me. I’ve been doing some night runs lately after work and it seems like they are less stressful and the time passes better because I can’t flick my wrist and look at my Garmin, I have to actually do work and turn the light on. So I’ve been thinking about not having it on my pace/time screen for this marathon for the same reason. Keep it up!
Good luck on your full!! That is awesome! I hope you get your goal! I have done some night runs in the past and love them because they are relaxing though I have noticed that when I run I feel like I am going much faster than I actually am so I end up just using them for easy recovery runs!
Let me know how your marathon goes!
