I am officially in the beginning stages of marathon training but due to some mail delays I am postponing the real start of my training until next week.
I decided to use the Hanson’s Marathon Method for my fall marathon. I’ve heard great things and they keep the mileage in the range that I feel comfortable with right now. They also incorporate some pretty hard workouts which is also something I am going to need to take my time down.

I ordered the book off Amazon last week in hopes that it would be here this Monday, but it hasn’t come in yet. I was able to pull up the schedule online and for those just starting the first week is mostly easy running before the workouts begin the following week.
I plan to do a more detailed review coming up once I have had a chance to go through it all. I am really looking forward to trying something new and exciting!
I am going to use this week to help get me ready to really dive head first into the training. I will still run 6 out of 7 days and follow the Hanson’s plan for the first week, but it allows me to give my body a break from last week’s tough workouts and still get ready to start the new training.
This morning I woke up earlier in hopes to beat the heat and ran 6 easy miles.
I don’t think I can really say that I “beat the heat” because it was pretty brutal.
Once Wes got home later in the evening we headed over to the local trail so that he could get his workout in. I knew he was tired so I figured having me bike with him for a little bit may help!
Yeah, it ended up being pretty hot. Even in the late afternoon. It was a good thing I was there with water!
I also want to thank you all for your awesome suggestions how to thicken up the sauce on my stir fry from a couple weeks ago. I decided tonight was a great night to try my stir fry again. After my last “failed” attempt I wanted to give it a go again.
This time I used your suggestions of adding corn starch and sesame oil to it and it turned out so much better!
I love that stir fry is such an easy way to use up leftovers we have laying around. I officially cleared the last of it out of our refrigerator!
Have you ever used Hanson’s Training method?
What is your next race you have scheduled?
I used a customized plan from Hanson’s marathon method (16 week 45-60 mpw). I really liked it but the only thing I would have done differently was take step back weeks. I was doing long runs of 15-18 miles each week without much chance to recover. I did feel like it was great plan otherwise and I really like a lot of the concepts they use. I would use it again but probably modify it based on what I learned.
Yes I have thought about adding a few step back weeks in there as well. I will need to look fully at the plan and then decide. They seem to really help me the best!
I have never been good at sticking to marathon plans as written because they didn’t seem to jive with what I wanted or needed! I’m going to create my own for philly, that way the only person I have to blame is myself if I hate it 🙂 I think any plan can be effective as long as you can modify it if needed to suit what works for you.
Very true Michele! I probably will adapt and change it based on my schedule and needs.
I officially started using the Hanson’s Marathon Method last month. I really like the concepts and the fact that it has a lot of speedwork built in. I got the book after my March marathon and used the first 8 weeks as a crossover/trial before officially starting from the beginning in June. Unfortunately, my October marathon was cancelled, and I am now running a Nov 8th marathon in Ft. Worth TX. So I restarted the plan (again) this week.
This schedule juggling has lead to a lot of speedwork so far, but I haven’t gone over 45 miles per week. I am a little concerned in the 2nd half when the weeks are closer to 60 miles per week. Both time and fatigue may make this plan difficult to keep up with.
Glad to hear you are having success with it! 45-60 miles is my “happy place” so I really don’t want to go too much over that. I am a little concerned when my schedule changes, but I guess I will deal with that as it comes 🙂
I’m in week 2 of Hanson right now. My first marathon plan had me running 5x a week and I got pretty burned out, but the weekly mileage is still the same so I’m hoping since I’ve run 2 marathons already I can handle it better this time around. My goal is to take about 15 min of my PR and everyone has said this is the plan to do it!
Good luck!! I look forward to starting it!
That looks awesome! Good luck starting your new training!
Thank you 🙂
Yes! I blogged about it here: http://shiawaselife.com/2014/01/07/hansons-marathon-method-my-thoughts/
I used the beginner plan last year, and this year, have just started W6 of the Advanced plan.
Heading over to read! 🙂
I’m in week 6 of Hanson’s. I’m using it for the Chicago marathon. So far, I love the plan! It’s not easy (the interval workouts are tough!), but I’m pleased with the results so far. I’m following the advance plan exactly as written. I think it’s important to do it as is and not modify too much to get the benefits of the plan. I’m hoping to break a 3:30 in Chicago. I’m hoping this plan will help me from falling apart those last 5-6 miles. Good luck!
Awesome! I love Chicago! I too fell apart those last 5-6 miles on the last marathon I ran which was quite a while now but hopefully this one will go better!
I’m finishing up week seven of the plan, and I’m still in love! So far it’s been tough but doable. Are you planning to do the beginners or advanced plan?
I am going to be doing the advanced plan!
I was going to use Hanson’s but I need a longer run than 16 miles to have the confidence for a marathon!
