Week 5 is officially done!
This is the first week where I can say I’ve really had a tough week. I think the cumulative fatigue is really starting to hit hard. I hope that I find a way to snap out of it so that my workouts continue to go well.
It’s hard to believe I’ve been marathon training for just over a month now. It is going by so fast, and I can tell that my body is starting to get tired. Since Hanson’s doesn’t really have step back weeks, you end up getting really tired after several weeks. To me, their way of doing step back weeks is doing one week with a harder long run and then the next week you have easy long runs.
Here is what my schedule looked like this week:
Monday (8/18)
6 miles easy
Tuesday (8/19)
1.5 mile warm up
3 x 1600 meters (with 600 meter recovery)
1.5 mile cool down
Wednesday (8/20)
6 miles easy
Thursday (8/21)
0.5 mile warm up
7 mile tempo run
0.5 mile cool down
Friday (8/22)
Off
Saturday (8/23)
10 easy miles
Sunday (8/24)
10 easy miles
My run on Saturday was supposed to be 12, but I ended up cutting it at 10. There are days when we have a tough runs and then there are days when we have downright AWFUL runs. I started off the run with high hopes. The idea of running longer and slow sounded like just what I needed, however my body had other decisions.
It was practically 100% humidity and my legs felt like lead. I stopped at least once every mile. Yep, it was one of those runs that I would rather not repeat again.
10 miles in total at a 9:43 pace. Not great, but I’ll take it! I am hoping I have better luck today. Fingers crossed!
Toughest Run
I don’t think this needs any further explanation, hands down it was Saturday’s run!
Best Run
The best run this week was actually my tempo run. I don’t know if it was because I had been dreading it so much or what, but on Thursday morning when I got on the treadmill everything just seemed to click. I felt like my body just got into a groove and didn’t stop.
I guess I used up all my good luck on that run!
My mileage stepped back a little bit this week, but that won’t last for long. It picks back up in week 6 so I need to put an even bigger focus on proper recovery. Hopefully my body and legs will get back into it!
That’s the great thing about running, you really never know what to expect!
How did your running go this week?
What were your best and toughest runs this week?
I think the hardest part for me about using Hanson’s was the lack of step back weeks. I ended up adding a couple in on my own, but I still don’t think it was enough. Mentally and physically I just couldn’t handle that kind of mileage week after week!
This looks like a really tough training plan! I’m interested to see how it turns out for you! I hope you can feel a little more rested next week. Good luck!
humidity can really just zap you. it can be so discouraging, but we all have cut it short runs. hope you were able to get some rest this weekend.
Sounds like you had a good training week! The humidity can really be humbling. Actually that was what really did me in when I ran my last marathon.

Yeah, I am having issues with Hanson’s as well. Very tough so far. I did run a half marathon this morning and set a PR, and that was with running 8 miles yesterday. So I am seeing some really good gains.
Good luck with the coming week!
-Run with joy!
I have a really hard time running in the heat and humidity, too. Better to listen to your body than to push it through something it’s not ready for. I feel like all of my runs were just as good as the others this week, except maybe today’s recovery run. My calves are all sorts of sore from my 16 miler on Friday. Time to foam roll! Good luck with next week’s runs!
Glad training is going well! My 22 yesterday was brutal in the humidity.
