This is my personal experience with running and pregnancy. Please consult with your doctor before starting any exercise during pregnancy.

It is hard to believe another week has already gone by, but then at the same time this week left me pretty exhausted. For some reason the whole “once you hit your second trimester you energy comes back” idea just hasn’t been the case for me. Come on week 16!

Baby in Week 15

15 weeks: Little one is the size of a navel orange (or pear) depending on which one of my pregnancy websites you look at.

To be honest, in these pictures it looks like I’m showing some but in real life I just look a little extra chubby! Ha!

Weight Gained: I had my doctor’s appointment on Monday and at 15 weeks I had gained 6 lbs so far. I haven’t really been looking at weight charts or anything, but I believe that is right in the normal range of where I’m supposed to be according to my doctor.

Due to my past with weight, I am really trying not to focus on weight gain but instead keeping up with my workouts and feeding my body (and baby) healthy and nutritious foods.

Symptoms: This week as usual was exhausting. It felt a little worse than last week though. The morning runs were even harder to get myself up and out of bed, and I even ended up skipping one of my cross training workouts. I try to just listen to what my body. I also had some nausea Wednesday and Thursday, but I believe that had to do more with the heat.

Food Aversions: None. I’m still going strong on “eat all the things.”

Food Cravings: There wasn’t anything out the ordinary, but after a party at work on Wednesday I was craving cupcakes. This is a first for me because for a majority of my pregnancy so far the foods that I really want are salty.

Sleep: I felt like I got better sleep this week, but every morning when I woke up I still felt very restless. It’s like no matter how many hours I get my body still wants more. I try to listen to it when I can, but due to the heat my running has to get done earlier in the day. Naps (sometimes even in the car at lunch) have become my best friend.

Baby Items Purchased: We are still at none. I’ve got a few fun things coming to review, but nothing specifically purchased yet. My husband has a crazy work schedule this month so we are holding off on going out and looking at things until that dies down. We also want to wait until we find out the gender for sure.

Exciting Happenings This Week: As I said, I had my 15 week appointment on Monday. It wasn’t anything too exciting, mostly just a check up to see how I was doing. My mom went with me, which was a nice treat! They listed to the baby’s heartbeat which is still around 160 and then we schedule my anatomy scan at 19 weeks. I can’t tell you how excited I am for my next appointment now!

Looking Forward To: My anatomy scan! Ok, so I’ve got 3 more weeks to go but I’m really excited to make sure everything is healthy with this little baby and to find out if we are having a little boy or a little girl!

Running in Week 15

As I mentioned, running was a bit tougher for me this week. My body still felt fine it was more just battling this tiredness that just won’t seem to go away. I just focus on relaxing my body and trying to enjoy the run without pressure to run a certain pace or distance.

Here is a quick breakdown of my running and workouts this week:

Monday -60 minutes on the treadmill (6.27 miles)

Tuesday – 50 minutes on the treadmill in the AM (5.3 miles), 30 minutes on the spin bike in the PM

Wednesday – 30 minutes on the treadmill (3.07 miles), 30 minutes on the spin bike

Thursday – 60 minutes on the treadmill (6.40 miles)

Friday – Rest day

Saturday

Sunday

My best day this week was Monday, which is strange because it normally does not work out that way. The original plan was to do 50 minutes, but I felt good so I increased it to 60 minutes and sped it up. I even got below a 9:00 minute/mile which was a big thing for me!

The hardest day was Tuesday. I had no plan but at 50 minutes I knew I was done and cut it. The treadmill can get exhausting running on it day after day, so I just knew it wasn’t my day. I had another decent run on Thursday and went for the full 60 minutes, even though the first 30 minutes were tough.

One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed running while pregnant is that the first 30 minutes of every run are awful.  Awful to where I just want to quit. I always have to remind myself it gets better and eventually my body starts to feel normal again.

I’m still keeping up with spinning 2-3 times per week, but this week decided against adding it to Thursday afternoon because I was so exhausted.
